UNESCO World Cultural Heritage: The Byzantine churches and the island’s most famous Greek Orthodox monastery

The mountains of the Troodos Massif rise grandly above Cyprus’s scorching plains, the green heart of the island - a must for any visitor. Ten Byzantine churches from this mountainous region have been included in UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list. The frescoes and unique mural paintings they feature are enchanting and certainly worth a visit.

The island's most wealthy and powerful religious institutions, the Kykko Monastery, lies in a secluded location on the North West face of the mountains. Its wealth and fame are based on an icon of the Virgin Mary painted by St Luke the Apostle, now housed in the monastery. Throughout the centuries locals have revered the icon and have attributed miracles to its presence. Villages are said to have been saved by the icon and tracts of land from drought. Believers offer gifts of precious metals and money in thanks.
