Holidays in Cyprus with Columbia Hotels

Columbia Beachotel and Columbia Beach Resort are perfectly located for nature holidays in Cyprus.

The third-largest island in the Mediterranean boasts a fascinating mix of the ancient, the traditional and the modern. Nowhere epitomises this more than the town of Pissouri in southern Cyprus.

Here’s a short guide to just a few of the best natural attractions to be seen and enjoyed on a holiday in Cyprus. Stay at a Columbia luxury venue - perfect destinations to explore natural Cyprus at its very best.

Flora and fauna

Nature lovers will be delighted by the diverse species of native flora and fauna. There are more than 40 different species of orchids in vibrant colours just waiting to be discovered and the dramatic white cliffs to the east of Pissouri Bay are a habitat for Griffon vultures.

Troodos Mountains

The Troodos Mountains are a natural wonder in their own right. The mountain range is located in the south-west of Cyprus and is volcanic. Unlike the rest of the mountain areas on the island, these unique mountains are covered by forest. The highest peak at 1,952 metres is Mount Olympus. It’s high enough for visitors to go skiing in the brief season from January to March. Visitors to the Troodos Mountains can see a wide range of wild animals including eagles, foxes and the moufflon, a rarely seen species of indigenous wild sheep. The mountains are home to a mix of vegetation including Aleppo pines, cedars and plane trees.

Village of Agros

The many villages scattered across the terrain offer amazing views into the valleys and over the mountain peaks, as well as a fascinating insight into some of the local culture and traditions of Cypriot life.

Take the small mountain village of Agros, situated 1,100 metres above the Mediterranean. It has been honoured with the EDEN Award 2008 – and forms part of the exclusive circle of European Destinations of Excellence. This EU-sponsored prize has been awarded since 2006 to outstanding but still essentially undiscovered travel sites to promote their development.

In Agros everything is traditionally centred around the rose flower. Local firms focus on the production of rose water, sweets, wine and liquor. Discover everything worth knowing about the cultivation and production of the rose flowers – whilst feeling a part of Cypriot culture.
