Car Hire Cyprus – Top Five Driving Tips

As well as remembering to drive on the left, we’ve put together five other driving tips for when you’re planning to hire a car in Cyprus.

1) Take a good pair of sunglasses

The glare from the sun in Cyprus can make driving difficult if you don’t have a good quality pair of strong sun glasses. You should also make sure you carry a spare pair in the glove box just in case anything happens to your main pair.

2) Have your driving license with you at all times

Always make sure you have your driving license with you whenever you take your hire car out in Cyprus. If you’re stopped for any reason or involved in accident, the local police will expect to see proof of your identity and that you’re legally allowed to drive in Cyprus.

3) Beware there is a minimum speed on the motorways

When you’re driving in a different country on unfamiliar roads, you may end up going a bit slower than normal. However, you need to bear in mind that there is a minimum speed of 65 km/h on the motorways and dual carriageways in Cyprus which equates to just over 40 mph.

4) Don’t take your hire car into Northern Cyprus

If you want to take a drive in your hire car from southern Cyprus to Northern Cyprus you should be aware that it’s regarded as a separate country when it comes to car insurance and breakdown cover.

It is very unlikely that your car hire terms and conditions will cover you for driving into Northern Cyprus so it’s not advisable.

5) Seatbelts are compulsory and mobile phone use is banned

It’s important to adhere to local laws when driving abroad and Cyprus is no different. Seatbelts are compulsory in the front and back, just as in many European countries.
