History of the island

Cyprus’s rich culture – a mix of tradition and modern

Cyprus offers a fascinating mix of ancient charm, tradition and modern culture. Fantastic beaches, the mild Mediterranean climate, craggy mountains and lush valleys with green forests, a multitude of archaeological sites plus a modern infrastructure – all of this is Cyprus.

So called the island of Aphrodite from the mythological the goddess of love and beauty, Cyprus is undoubtedly seductive. Some say that the magic of this part of Cyprus can be attributed to the legend that says Aphrodite rose from the ocean's waves not far from here, in Petra tou Romiou.

Even Homer mentioned the island's special relationship with Aphrodite. The region around Paphos plays a special role in the story. This is reputed to be the birthplace of the goddess, and is also the site of one of the most important ancient kingdoms of Cyprus, and now the location of the Kouklia excavations. And there is a wealth of museums and splendid mosaics nearby.
