History of the island

Often called the island of Aphrodite from the mythical goddess of love and beauty, Cyprus is certainly a romantic destination. Some say that Pissouri’s magic is attributed to the fact that Aphrodite is said to have risen from the ocean's waves not far from here, at Petra tou Romiou.

Even Homer mentioned the Mediterranean's third-largest island's special relationship with Aphrodite. The region around Paphos plays a special role in the story. This area is supposed to be the birthplace of the goddess, and also the location where the Kouklia excavations and various museums and mosaics can be viewed.
