A late spring or summer break in Cyprus offers more than just sea and sunshine. Stay at the luxurious five star COLUMBIA Beach Resort in the panoramic bay of Pissouri on the south west coast and get easy access to a wealth of cultural activities, festivals and events that celebrate the island’s unique cultural and geographic situation on the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa.
Get in tune with nature and see the Anthestiria Flower Festival at the end of May. This is a celebration of spring and nature's rebirth. A stunning parade of flower floats and local people carrying beautiful fresh flowers fills the old harbour of Paphos. A similar festival takes place in Limassol in the heart of the tourist area. Both towns are just 25 minutes away from the COLUMBIA Beach Resort.
If chamber music played by world-class musicians in an atmospheric setting (in the ancient temple of Aphrodite, part of the Aphrodite cultural route in Cyprus) then the 8th International Pharos Chamber Music Festival is a must. Taking place from 29 May to June at Kouklia near Paphos, just 20 minutes drive from the Beach Resort, the festival will include music by Schumann, Beethoven and Brahms, Mozart, Elgar and Tchaikovsky.
The village of Pissouri, perched on the cliffs 1000 feet above the COLUMBIA Beach Resort, hosts a week of cultural events in the summer. Catch the International Folk Dance Festival that is held in Pissouri’s own amphitheatre in July with participants from all over Europe and beyond. This authentic south-facing village, with its stunning views across the bay, offers dances, theatre performances, live music and plenty of food and drink around the village.
And it’s not too far to walk back to the COLUMBIA Beach Resort after the revelries are over.
Opera lovers should choose to visit Cyprus at the end of August for the annual Paphos Aphrodite Festival where this year they are staging Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini on 29, 30 & 31 August. The setting is particularly evocative in the town’s medieval castle.
Finish the summer at the annual Wine Festival in Limassol, Cyprus' wine-growing capital. The country's rich viticulture is celebrated with the annual grape festival, this year from August 29 to September 7. Scores of the island's wineries and vineyards converge on the town's Municipal Gardens where fee wine tastings are offered from the barrel. The celebratory atmosphere is enhanced by the samples of traditional dishes and sweets with local handicrafts on sale, dancing and theatrical performances.
Compliment the cultural pursuits with a stay at the COLUMBIA Beach Resort, one of the most exclusive hotels on the island, or the sister property, the four star COLUMBIA Beachotel, both located on a glorious unspoiled beach in Pissouri Bay surrounded by rugged cliffs and acres of vineyards in the valleys behind.
Inspired by local Cypriot villages, these distinctive hotels are designed by a local architect so that old and new blend together, featuring local stone, reclaimed terracotta tiles and clever planting, creating a stylish and calm atmosphere to reflect the stunning landscape.
Facilities at the Beach Resort include a highly regarded spa that exclusively features Molton Brown spa treatments in Cyprus, floodlit tennis court, squash courts, a fully equipped gym and regular exercise classes many of which are held on the landscaped lawns outside.
At the Beachotel guests can enjoy a health and fitness centre with its gym, sauna and steam rooms. A great range of massages from across the world ensure total relaxation to compliment the cultural excursions of the island. For the very active three international golf courses are located in the vicinity and there are first class water-sports on offer in the bay.
A short break at the COLUMBIA Beach Resort or the COLUMBIA Beachotel is particularly memorable – the views, the understated opulence, but also the cuisine. An excellent version of the famous Cyprus meze is available in the Resort’s Apollo Taverna which overlooks the sea over Cape Aspro, a firm favourite with locals as well as visitors looking for a quality authentic cuisine. The team of highly creative chefs at the Beach Resort are also becoming noticed for their highly original and flavoursome gastronomic fayre at the Dionysos restaurant – international fine dining at its best.
